Abstract

The relationship between mother and daughter is the longest relationship a daughter has throughout her lifetime. This relationship creates a lasting impact on the daughter’s personality and well-being into adulthood. Daughters will be emotionally connected with their mothers during infancy, break away during puberty and reconnect as adults. As daughters start their own families, they rely on their mothers’ support once again. Attachment types and parenting styles between mothers and their daughters affect how daughters interact with friends and romantic partners ultimately. Mother-daughter relationships are cyclic in nature as daughters raise their children like their mothers.

About Me

My name is Madison Miller, a senior at Wakefield School in The Plains, Virginia. Following my graduation, I will be attending Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, where I plan to study economics with a minor in Spanish. Through my research, I developed an interest in psychology particularly in the way we interact with one another. I was inspired by a past junior thesis exploring mother-daughter relationships in the novel, Purple Hibiscus. In my relationship with my mother, I was interested in the direct effects of parenting on friendships and romantic relationships.
